by time news

The partial collapse of a multi-story building that occurred on June 24 in the American Surfside (the city is part of Miami, Florida) killed at least five people, said Mayor of Miami-Dade County Danielle Levin Kawa.

“Today, rescuers found another body in the wreckage, and the remains were also found,” said Ms Levin Kava during a briefing (quoted by AFP). The number of people whose fate is unknown dropped to 156.

Morabito Consultants, whose inspectors carried out an inspection of the building in 2018, said it had warned the governing association about the need to renovate the building, but by the time of the collapse, significant renovation had not begun. Earlier, The New York Times reported that the founder of the consulting company, Frank Morabito, reported significant structural damage to the building.

In the course of the collapse, according to the authorities, about half of the 130 apartments were destroyed. The reason for the collapse was not named.
