So far, private builders have hardly ever built social housing

by time news

Of the 1,212 social housing units in Berlin that were completed last year, most were built by the state-owned housing associations. Private builders, on the other hand, contributed only a small part of the inexpensive accommodation, although they are otherwise responsible for the majority of new apartments in Berlin. This emerges from the response of the Senate Department for Urban Development to a request from the Left MP Niklas Schenker. The six state-owned housing companies accounted for 1,113 of the 1,212 subsidized apartments that were completed last year. 58 were built by private parties, 41 by cooperatives.
