Hurricane “Milton” expected in Florida is also hitting the region’s sports teams and forcing some to flee the US state. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers of the American football league NFL said they wanted to move to New Orleans on Tuesday to prepare for the next game next Sunday at the Saints.
An “extremely serious” threat to Florida
“Milton,” now a Category 5 storm, is expected to make landfall on the west coast of Florida on Wednesday. The storm poses an “extremely serious” and life-threatening threat to Florida, authorities said.
The NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning ice hockey team had to cancel their preseason game against the Nashville Predators on Monday evening. The game was previously postponed due to Hurricane Helene, which caused extensive damage in the region two weeks ago.
The Lightning will open the regular season on Friday in North Carolina and traveled to Raleigh on Tuesday to prepare for the game against the Hurricanes. The first home game is scheduled for Saturday and should now go ahead as planned. The NBA’s Orlando Magic are on the road this week and will play in San Antonio on Wednesday.
College sports are also affected: The University of Central Florida in Orlando announced that all home games on Wednesday and Thursday have been canceled. They include the volleyball game against Colorado on Wednesday and the women’s soccer game against Arizona on Thursday. The first day of the ITA Southeast Regionals tennis tournament on Thursday was also cancelled.
