Sheinbaum celebrates approval of the railway reform

After the Chamber of Deputies approved the railway reformthe president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaumcelebrated the decision and highlighted that now in the Constitution it was clear that the state can use the current roadswhich are concessioned, for the passenger transport.

“It is the same thing that was already in the contracts, only now it is clear in the Constitution, and that will allow the possibility of using those roads for passenger transportation, or, as was done in the Mayan Train, making new tracks for a new train,” he highlighted.

During the press conference, at the National Palace, the director of the Railway Transport Regulatory Agency, Andrés Lajous, recalled that previous administrations privatized the trains, but it was from 2018, when the former president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, began with recovery.

For this reason, the official highlighted the construction of the Mayan Train, the Tehuantepec Isthmus Train, and the Mexico – Toluca Train. Lajous also mentioned that currently 7.55% of the total tracks in operation are used for passenger transportation.

“What the constitutional reform does is that it recovers for the State, that the 18 thousand kilometers of passenger service can be operated by public entities, not just those that are operating,” he highlighted.

Meanwhile, the director of the Rail Transport Regulatory Agency, Andrés Lajous, pointed out that the administration of the president, Claudia Sheinbaum, is committed to putting 3 thousand kilometers of railway into operation.
