Joe Root was supposed to score a triple century. The English batsman brought up his double century before Brooke on the fourth day. However, as he went towards the triple, he had to burn with regret. Harry Brook was overjoyed. This batsman got the first triple century of his career. At the same time, he is leading the team to a big lead.
Brooke became the sixth Englishman and the 28th batsman in Test history to score a triple century. His century is the fastest in Test history. Brook played 311 balls to reach his triple hundred in Multan. Virender Sehwag reached the triple century by playing the fewest balls. The former Indian batsman played 278 balls.
Brook stopped at 317 runs. This is Brook’s first career triple century. The last 300 for England before Brooke was Graham Gooch, 34 years ago. Gooch played an innings of 333 runs against India in Lord’s Test in 1990.
There has been no triple century in Test history in the last five years. David Warner played an unbeaten innings of 335 runs against Pakistan in Adelaide in 2019. And this is the fifth triple century against Pakistan in total in Tests. The first was done in 1958 by the legendary Gary Sobers.
In response to Pakistan’s 556 runs in the first innings, England announced the innings by picking up 823 runs for 7 wickets. This is England’s highest total since World War II and the highest by any team against Pakistan. Another record was set in this match, for the first time in Test history that 5 Pakistani bowlers scored a run-costing century in an innings.
