Cuban Zoe Martínez, 25, made history by becoming the first Antillean elected to the Municipal Council of São Paulo, Brazil.
Representing the Liberal Party, Martínez obtained a total of 60,272 votes, placing him in 13th place among the candidates with the most votes in the recent municipal elections held on Sunday, October 6.
Martínez emigrated to Brazil in 2011, seeking to escape the Cuban regime.
Her political activism began with her support for Jair Bolsonaro in the 2018 elections, and after this she became naturalized as a Brazilian citizen.
His political career has been marked by his firm opposition to both the communist regime and the Brazilian left, which has allowed him to gain a considerable base of followers, accumulating more than 1.3 million on Instagram.
Before his foray into politics, Martínez worked as a commentator on the Jovem Pan channel, where his opinions and criticism of the Supreme Federal Court (STF) and other sectors of the Brazilian government attracted attention.
She also collaborated as a parliamentary advisor for federal representative Bia Kicis between 2019 and 2020.
Although his media career was interrupted by controversies, including his departure from Jovem Pan and an investigation by the Federal Public Ministry (MPF), Martínez continues to maintain his critical stance and focus on his new role in local politics.
“I have no resentments,” he said.
The Cuban presenter Alexander Otaola spoke with Zoe Martínez, on several occasions when he had her as a guest on his programs Hola! Ota-Ola and El Mañanero, highlighting her career in Brazil and her position of warning Brazilians not to fall into dictatorships like the one she experienced on the island.
Recently, in an interview in Brazil, Zoe highlighted the symbolic value of her victory, pointing out that she is not only a foreigner, but an immigrant who fled a regime in search of freedom.
