A year ago, the “Iron Dome” missile defense system successfully protected Tel Aviv from hundreds of Palestinian missiles, detonating enemy missiles while they were still in the air.
The defense policy spokesman for the Union faction Florian Hahn (47, CSU) is now demanding an “Iron Dome for Berlin” to protect the capital from Russian missiles (estimated costs: 10 billion euros). Putin was “trustworthy of anything in his tyranny mania”.
That’s why Hahn demands: “We have to reposition ourselves in air defense. The Russian exclave of Kaliningrad is literally bursting with Russian conventional missiles aimed at NATO.” Cities like Berlin or Warsaw can be reached in a very short time.
And: “With our current resources, we would not be able to effectively protect our capital from rocket fire.”
The military historian Prof. Matthias Strohn (45) conducts research at the Center for Conflict Research (Buckingham University): “Air and missile defense is a major problem for the Bundeswehr, both in the tactical and in the operational and strategic areas. The existing Patriot systems are outdated and insufficient .”
