In a new development in the path of cooperation between the three countries, the presidents of Egypt, Somalia and Eritrea held a tripartite summit in the Eritrean capital, Asmara, on Thursday.
The Somali presidency announced that “President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who arrived in Eritrea yesterday, met with his Egyptian counterpart, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, and his Eritrean counterpart, Isaias Afwerki, in a tripartite summit in Asmara.”
Somalia stressed that “the summit focuses on the mutual and common interests of the three countries, and stability in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea region.”
Somalia wants the Ethiopian forces to leave its lands, whether under the banner of the African Union or under bilateral agreements, after Addis Ababa signed a controversial agreement with a separatist Somali region, to reach the Red Sea by obtaining a piece of coastal land to build a military base and port. Bahri, in exchange for recognizing the independence of Somaliland, which Mogadishu considered a violation of its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Last September, the foreign ministers of the three countries met in New York on the sidelines of their participation in the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, and Egypt and Somalia signed a military agreement last August.
