The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, appointed Alejandro Flores Navaas head of the National Aquaculture and Fisheries Commission (Conapesca) during the present federal administration.
It was reported that part of this Government’s commitment will be to promote sustainable fishing and aquaculture with the aim of increasing the supply of these products and, in this way, contributing to the nutritious and healthy diet of the people of Mexico.

Alejandro Flores Nava has more than 40 years of experience in the sector, nationally and internationally.
He is a fisheries engineer with a specialty in Aquaculture from the Veracruz Sea Technological Institute, and a master’s and doctorate in Aquaculture Sciences from the University of Stirling in Scotland.
He was head of the Department of Marine Resources and director of the Center for Research and Advanced Studies (CINVESTAV) of the National Polytechnic Institute in Mérida, Yucatán, Mexico; founding director of the School of Natural Resources, and rector of the Marist University of Mérida, Mexico; He served as an international consultant for the Program to Support the Development of Fisheries and Aquaculture in the Central American Isthmus of the European Union.

He joined FAO in 2009, where he was coordinator of the Multidisciplinary Team for South America; FAO representative in Argentina and Chile; His last position was as Principal Fisheries and Aquaculture Officer for Latin America and the Caribbean and technical secretary of the Commission for Artisanal, Small-Scale Fisheries and Aquaculture of Latin America and the Caribbean (COPPESAALC).
