Dhaka: Amid incidents of violence against Hindus during Durga Puja in Bangladesh, Mohammad Yunus, Chief Advisor to the country’s interim government, visited the historic Dhakeshwari Temple in Dhaka on Saturday, October 12. During this, Mohammad Yunus wished Durga Puja to the Hindu community. During the ceremony at the temple, Mohammad Yunus said that the government wants to make Bangladesh in such a way, ‘where the rights of every citizen will be ensured.’
Attacks on temples in Bangladesh
The visit comes at a time when there have been reports of attacks on another major Durga Puja in Dhaka. Earlier today on Saturday, India had expressed serious concern over the attacks on Durga Puja pavilions citing the Tantibazar incident in Bangladesh on Friday and the theft of the gold crown at the Jeshoreshwari Kali temple in Satkhira.
India had condemned the attack
The Ministry of External Affairs issued a statement calling the incidents ‘disgusting’ and said these incidents reflected a ‘systematic pattern’ of desecrating temples and deities. “We call on the Government of Bangladesh to ensure the safety of Hindus and all minorities and their places of worship, especially during this auspicious festival time,” the Indian Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.
After India’s statement, Mohammad Yunus visited Dhakeshwari National Temple on the same day. Earlier, Yunus had planned to go to the temple on Sunday. Dhakeshwari Temple is located in the old part of the city and is one of the major Shakti Peethas.
