(Reuters) – At least five people died in the city of Sao Paulo and inland municipalities as rain and strong winds hit the region on Friday night, the state government said on Saturday, while 2.6 million consumers they were left without electricity. disruptions, according to Aneel’s information.
The State Civil Protection reported in a statement that on Friday in the station south of Sao Paulo the gusts of wind reached a record speed of 107.6 km/h.
Two people died, in the capital and in Diadema, due to falling trees. In Bauru there were three more deaths due to the collapse of a wall. In Cotia two people were hospitalized in serious conditions due to a landslide.
According to the National Electricity Agency (Aneel) of the 2.6 million addresses affected by the blackout, 2.1 million are located in Enel’s operational area (MI:). The agency specifies that the company will be immediately summoned to provide clarifications, adding that it may review its concession, recommending its “expiration” to the Ministry of Mines and Energy, if it does not “present a satisfactory and immediate solution for the supply of the service”.
Also in a note, Enel reported that of the 2.1 million affected consumers, 650,000 had their electricity restored, but did not give a deadline for a complete solution to the problem by the state. According to the company, in addition to the capital, the most affected cities are Taboão da Serra, Cotia, São Bernardo do Campo, Santo André and Diadema.
In early November last year, a blackout also caused by a thunderstorm left nearly 4 million addresses in the state of Sao Paulo without electricity. Service was fully restored just one week after the extreme weather event.
This Saturday, the Ministry of Mines and Energy specified in a note that Minister Alexandre Silveira ordered the sending of an official letter to Aneel in which it is specified that the agency covers the speed of the Enel distributor in restoring the energy in the São Paulo metropolitan region.
“The agency evidently does not control the energy distributor, as Enel’s problems are repeated in São Paulo and also in other areas of the company’s concession,” the ministry said.
