Senior Vice President, Chief Researcher, International Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) Professor Stephen Hamburg noted the importance of Azerbaijan’s methane initiatives, which will be presented at COP29 in November in Baku.
As Day.Az reports, Hamburg told Trend exclusively about this.
According to him, the upcoming Methane Declaration, mainly concerning measures to prevent methane emissions in the oil and gas sector, will be of great importance.
“Azerbaijan’s initiative to reduce methane emissions of organic origin (that is, from food waste) is also important, since it is aimed at ensuring cleanliness of the earth, and not just the atmosphere,” he noted.
Regarding expectations from the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, the EDF Senior Vice President said that COP29 is designed to endorse the implementation of a number of global climate ambitions and ensure progress on them, in particular on reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
“I believe that there are real opportunities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the world, in particular in the oil and gas industry. Progress is possible thanks to the development of technological developments,” said Stephen Hamburg.
In his opinion, countries around the world should optimize the use of fossil fuels in the fight against climate change, manage production processes more effectively, and minimize greenhouse gas emissions, which will allow them to achieve the climate goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
It should be noted that COP29 will be held in Baku on November 11-22, at which about 60 international documents are expected to be signed.
