First meeting since KS in 2002… First game in Daegu today
Samsung Reyes and LG Choi Won-tae, starting pitchers face off
The professional baseball Samsung Lions and LG Twins will face off in the postseason for the first time in 22 years.
Samsung and LG will play the first game of the 2024 Shinhan Solbank KBO postseason playoffs (PO, best of 5) at Samsung Lions Park in Daegu on the 13th.
Samsung and LG, who had been fiercely competing for second place this season, faced each other on the way to the Korean Series (KS, best of 7 games). It has been 22 years since the two teams met in fall baseball in 2002. At that time, Samsung took the top spot in KS by beating LG with a series record of 4 wins and 2 losses.
In this season’s record against opponents, Samsung had a slight advantage with 8 wins, 1 draw, and 7 losses.
Samsung, which succeeded in advancing directly to the PO by overtaking LG and taking second place, had a sufficient rest after the regular season ended, and recently improved its sense of real-world performance through practice games and self-evaluation matches.
Samsung will nominate Denny Reyes as the starting pitcher for the first game. This season, he pitched 144 innings in 26 games, recording 11 wins, 4 losses, and an ERA of 3.81. In two games against LG this year, he recorded one win and an average ERA of 3.60.
Samsung’s mound has become thinner due to the departure of foreign ace Connor Siebold and veteran left-hander Baek Jeong-hyeon due to injury, but the offensive power of its hot batting lineup remains the same. Led by Koo Ja-wook, Kim Young-woong, Llewin Diaz, Kang Min-ho, and Park Byeong-ho will begin targeting LG’s pitching staff from the first game.
LG, who defeated KT Wiz with 3 wins and 2 losses in the semi-playoffs (semi-PO, best of 5 games) and became PO, will take a day’s rest before facing Samsung in the first game. Although their stamina is lower than that of Samsung, they head to Daegu in a good direction.
LG entrusts the important responsibility of starting the first game to Choi Won-tae, who is on the mound after a four-day break. Choi Won-tae appeared in 24 games this season, pitching 126⅔ innings, and recorded 9 wins, 7 losses, and an average ERA of 4.26. Against Samsung, he was strong with one win in two games and an average ERA of 0.84.
It is important for Austin Dean, who showed the quality of an RBI king in the semi-PO, and Shin Min-jae, who roamed the field in all directions, to maintain their batting upward trend in the PO as well. Austin led the attack with a batting average of 0.300, 1 home run, and 6 RBIs, while Shin Min-jae played well with a batting average of 0.350, 3 RBIs, 5 stolen bases, and 4 runs scored.
The probability that the team that won the first game in the best-of-five PO series will advance to the Korean Series is 75.8% (25 out of 33). Attention is focused on the first game to see who will be the team that dominates the baseline and has a 75.8% chance.
