/ Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu stressed the need to prepare to confront the possible Istanbul earthquake, noting that the issue is a “vital issue.”

The mayor said in a speech (Sunday evening), “The painful memory of last year’s earthquake in the southeast of the country makes it necessary to prepare to confront a possible Istanbul earthquake.”

Imamoglu pointed out that the first anniversary of the February 6, 2023 earthquake was approaching, and said, “In that earthquake, thousands of people lost their lives while sleeping at night in their homes, while they were living in peace.”

Imamoglu added: “We buried many children, women, youth, children and adults together, and the pain still exists in that area… Millions of Turkish people face deep problems that need solutions.”

He added: “The issue of the earthquake in Istanbul is a vital issue, because just like the earthquake we witnessed in the east and southeast, the earthquake here is waiting for us at the door as a major threat.”

It is noteworthy that the Turkish geophysicist, Professor Ovgun Ahmet Ercan, predicted at the beginning of this year that a strong earthquake would occur in the country before spring, but he found it difficult to determine the exact location of the tremors.

He added: “The emerging picture shows this possibility. It shows that tension is increasing in particular in Anatolia.”
