The Council of the European Union (EU) announced on Monday a one-year extension, until October 16, 2025, of restrictive measures for the “proliferation and use of chemical weapons.”

As Day.Az reports with reference to a message from the Council of the EU, the council’s communiqué recalls that these measures apply to 25 individuals and three organizations whose financial assets are subject to freezing, and individuals and organizations in the EU are prohibited from providing them with funds, financial assets or economic resources.

Individuals on the list are subject to a travel ban to the EU.

“The sanctions regime is aimed at facilitating EU efforts to counter the proliferation and use of chemical weapons, as well as supporting the implementation of the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production, Stockpiling and Use of Chemical Weapons and on Their Destruction (CWC),” the EU Council said in a statement.

The European Council reaffirmed on 22 March 2018 that “the use of chemical weapons, including the use of any toxic chemical as a weapon in any circumstances, is completely unacceptable, must be systematically and strictly condemned and poses a threat to the security of all.”

Let us recall that on October 15, 2018, the Council adopted a legal framework for restrictive measures against the proliferation and use of chemical weapons. This framework is currently valid until October 16, 2026.
