The African Group in the UN Security Council called for “the appointment of a special representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Libya as soon as possible, with the aim of breaking the current stalemate in the political process and facilitating negotiations between the Libyan parties.”
The group stressed, “the need to provide full support for the mediation efforts made by the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, and the group also welcomed the agreement reached regarding resolving the crisis of the Libyan Central Bank,” stressing that “this achievement represents an important step towards achieving stability in the country.” .
The Deputy Permanent Representative of Mozambique to the United Nations said, during the Security Council meeting devoted to discussing the situation in Libya: “The African Group stressed the importance of the effective implementation of the central bank agreement,” noting that this “is essential to ensure a stable economic and political future for Libya.”
The group called on “all relevant Libyan institutions to work together to implement this agreement, while emphasizing the necessity of appointing a new board of governors for the Central Bank, accelerating financial arrangements and establishing a unified national budget.” It also stressed “the importance of the role of the Central Bank in protecting Libya’s resources, in particular oil reserves, and ensuring that this wealth is distributed fairly to all Libyans.”
The African Group stressed that “achieving stability in Libya requires the combined efforts of all Libyan and international parties, and that the appointment of a special representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations will contribute significantly to facilitating this effort.”
The group includes the countries of Algeria, Mozambique, Sierra Leone and Guyana.
