Countries must collaborate to establish new national climate commitments.
As Day.Az reports with reference to Trend, this was stated by the First Deputy Secretary General of the UN Amina Mohammed during a speech at a round table entitled “The Troika Roadmap to Mission 1.5: Strengthening International Cooperation”, held as part of Pre-COP29.
She noted that the obligations that will be assigned to COP29 participants must be fulfilled.
“We have a responsibility to provide the support needed to address climate change. We work with governments every day to support countries in developing new plans. This will also help increase investment.
Some countries are unable to implement their plans. The main goal of the UN is to support such countries and create conditions for partnership. Countries must cooperate in establishing new national commitments. Time is shortening and due to this, urgent steps must be taken. We now need global dialogue so that everyone’s voice is heard. COP29 will show us the extent to which we are united. The world needs events like this,” she added.
COP29 will show concrete results in addressing climate issues – Amina Jane Mohammed
It should be noted that the preliminary meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), that is, PreCOP29, preceding the climate summit itself, began work in Baku.
PreCOP29 in Baku is held under the motto “Raising Ambition and Ensuring Action”.
The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) will be held in November this year in Azerbaijan. This decision was made at the COP28 plenary meeting held in Dubai on December 11 last year. Within two weeks, Baku will become the center of the world and will receive about 70-80 thousand foreign guests.
The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system. The abbreviation COP (Conference of Parties) translated from English means “Conference of Parties”, this is the highest legislative body that controls the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change.
There are 198 countries that are parties to the Convention. Unless the parties agree otherwise, the COP is held annually. The first COP event took place in March 1995 in Berlin, and its secretariat is located in Bonn.
