It is 2024 mark the 80th anniversary of the Revolution of October 20, 1944a movement that transformed Guatemala and left a lasting impact on the political, social and economic life of the country. This movement, led by students, teachers and popular sectors, put an end to the dictatorship of Jorge Ubico and gave way to a stage known as the «Democratic Spring», which brought with it several changes, especially for the working class.
On the occasion of this anniversary, the Government of Guatemala has organized a series of free cultural, artistic and civic activities under the motto “1944-2024: A Living Revolution». These activities seek to remember the legacy of the Revolution and recognize its influence today.
Details of events taking place in October
Within the framework of this commemoration, various events have been prepared that will take place throughout the month of October. Guided tours at the Army Museum
Until October 31, from Monday to Sunday, guided tours will be taking place at the Army Museum. These tours allow you to learn more about the military history of Guatemala and its role during the Revolution. Hours are from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm and admission is free.
Floral offering by Miguel Ángel Asturias
On October 19, at 10:00 am, a wreath will be laid at the Monument to Miguel Ángel Asturias, located on Avenida La Reforma. This event pays tribute to the Guatemalan Nobel Prize in Literature and his contribution to revolutionary thought and Guatemalan culture.
Festival of Lights: Let’s walk the legacy of the Revolution – Mapping
On October 19, from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm, there will be a walk that will cover eight key points in Guatemala City, from the Honor Guard to the National Palace of Culture. The facades of several buildings will be illuminated with projections of the emblematic events of the 1944 Revolution, offering a unique visual experience.
Ensemble with the National Symphony Orchestra and the Martial Symphonic Band
On October 20, at 7:00 pm, the Plaza de la Constitución will be the scene of a concert by the National Symphony Orchestra and the Martial Symphonic Band. The musicians will perform Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture.
Legends Race
For sports lovers, on October 20 at 8:00 am the Legends Race will take place, a 10 kilometer competition that will start from the Ministry of Education and end at the Campo de Marte.
Scenic paintings of the Revolution
The TGW traveling theater group will present live recreations of the most significant moments of the 1944 Revolution. These performances will take place in the streets of the Historic Center, starting at 21st Street and 6th Street. Avenue of Zone 1 and ending at the Concha Acústica.
Concert of the National Symphony Orchestra
On October 21, at 8:00 pm, the National Symphony Orchestra will present the work 900 by Sergio Reyes in the Great Efraín Recinos Room of the National Theater.
Artistic exhibition: González Goyri, Dagoberto Vásquez, Carlos Mérida and Galeotti Torres
On October 24, at 6:00 pm, an exhibition will be inaugurated in honor of the great artists of the pictorial boom of the Revolution. In addition, a conversation will be held with prominent plastic masters to reflect on the legacy of these artists in the cultural identity of Guatemala.
Play Mr. President
On October 24, 25, 26, 30 and 31, at the Miguel Ángel Asturias Cultural Center, the play will be presented Mr. Presidentan adaptation of the famous novel by Miguel Ángel Asturias. The performances will be at 8:00 pm, and space is limited.
Festival of the Revolution in Érick Barrondo Park
Starting at 9:00 am on October 26, this park will host recreational activities for the whole family, including the play Route of the Revolution.
Forum Protagonists, not spectators
This forum will bring together Carolina Sarti, Julia Morales Trujillo, Catalina Soberanis and Lucrecia Méndez de Penedo, who will explore the path towards the fight for equality in commemoration of the role of women in the revolutionary period. The activity will be on October 30 at 10:00 am in the Patio de la Paz of the National Palace of Culture.
