An event was held at the headquarters of the <a href="https://time.news/faced-with-the-growing-risks-of-climate-change-the-red-cross-strengthens-its-response-to-protect-family-contact/" title="Faced with the growing risks of climate change, the Red Cross strengthens its response to protect family contact”>International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, organized jointly with the chairmanship of COP29 and dedicated to the interaction between climate change and the global world. It was attended by permanent missions of UN agencies in Geneva, representatives of international humanitarian organizations, as well as delegates from UN member states.

As Day.Az reports with reference to Trend, Secretary General of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies Jagan Chapagainopening the event, thanked Azerbaijan for drawing attention to the relationship between climate change and peace and praised the efforts of the COP29 Presidency in this area.

Chief Advisor to the COP29 Presidency, Ambassador-at-Large of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan Elshad Iskenderov presented to the participants the concept of the Day of Peace, Relief and Reconstruction, which is planned to be held within the framework of COP29. He noted that water shortages, threats to food security, soil degradation and increased migration due to climate change pose serious threats to international peace and security.

“Only 2 percent of climate finance is allocated to address these problems affecting more than 500 million people, leaving many underdeveloped countries in the grip of hunger, conflict and disease for years. Developed countries must focus not on politically motivated problems, but on real disasters by taking action practical steps in this direction. Azerbaijan, as the chairman of COP29, is ready to serve the real world through the proposed initiatives,” Iskenderov emphasized.

The event participants were also presented with the concept of the Baku Center for Climate and Peace, initiated by the COP29 Presidency, as well as the draft Baku Climate Call for Peace with practical proposals.

The Permanent Representative of Azerbaijan to the UN Office in Geneva, Ambassador Galib Israfilov, noted the importance of Azerbaijan’s initiatives within the framework of the Action Program of the COP29 Presidency, aimed at strengthening international peace.

During the discussions, which brought together representatives from 42 countries and 12 international organizations, the agenda of the COP29 Presidency was highly praised. Participants received comprehensive answers to numerous questions.
