The Chairman of the Saeima’s Budget and Finance (Tax) Commission Jānis Reirs (JV) told journalists that the 2025 budget does not provide for “deputy quotas”, but the coalition will still discuss it.
On the other hand, Prime Minister Evika Siliņa (JV), reacting to Reira’s statements, announced on social networks that the “deputy quotas” will not be restored, as this was agreed upon in the coalition. “We have determined clear and equal conditions for the allocation of budget funds,” said Siliņa.
Meanwhile, Reir “sees nothing wrong” with “deputy quotas”. According to him, deputies, when meeting with residents, see the needs of society “a little differently”. According to the politician, more than 90% of all “deputy quotas” are directed to the non-governmental sector.
“I don’t see anything wrong with giving additional funding, for example, to Apeiron. The government works at the macroeconomic level, and we do.” [deputātiem] there are opportunities and rights to work at the micro level,” said Reirs.
Other politicians present at the event did not rush to deny Rier’s prejudices.
As reported, today the Speaker of the Saeima Daiga Mieriņa (ZZS) received the 2025 state budget draft from the Minister of Finance Arvil Asheraden (JV) in the parliament building.
The Speaker of the Saeima expressed that this is the budget for national security and support for the less protected population. “There is a lot of thought in the budget so that our people and residents feel better, safer and protected,” said Mieriņa.
She praised the ability to make significant strides in the field of welfare, improving the well-being of the population. “It’s a little bit, but we’re moving up,” said Mieriņa, emphasizing that the budget was created on the basis of complex negotiations.
Mieriņa admitted that this budget does not cover all needs, because, for example, insufficient funding has been marked for the field of health care, as well as education reform plans are currently without clear funding, as the government has committed to look for it.
The members of the Saeima will have scrupulous work to find the best solutions for improving the well-being of the population, as well as promoting the growth of the national economy, said the Speaker of the Saeima, emphasizing that she expects active cooperation with the government.
Mieriņa believes that when adopting this budget, it is necessary to agree on amendments to the law, which would provide for the obligation to create the state budget as a “zero budget”. This is important in order to reduce the bureaucracy and to review all expenses on their merits, stressed the Speaker of the Saeima.
