Korea’s healthy life expectancy was found to be highest in Seoul and lowest in Busan. The average life expectancy was 84.6 years, but the healthy life expectancy was 70.5 years, showing a gap of 14.1 years.

‘Life expectancy’ refers to the average number of years a person is expected to survive when he or she is born. ‘Healthy lifespan’ refers to the number of years a person survives while being active in a healthy state, excluding the period of illness due to illness, from life expectancy.

According to the ‘2021 Healthy Life Expectancy by Province and Province’ submitted by the Korea Institute for Health Promotion and Development by Nam In-soon, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea on the Health and Welfare Committee of the National Assembly, Seoul had the highest age at 71.20 years. This was followed by Sejong (71.09 years), Daejeon (70.94 years), Gyeonggi (70.88 years), and Chungnam (70.73 years).

The lowest healthy life expectancy was Busan at 69.35 years, followed by Jeonnam (69.48 years), Incheon (69.75 years), Gwangju (69.91 years), North Chungcheong Province (69.92 years), and Ulsan (69.93 years). The gap between Seoul, which has the longest healthy lifespan, and Busan, which has the shortest, has widened to 1.85 years.

Korea’s healthy life expectancy increased from 70.4 years in 2018 to 70.9 years in 2020, but then decreased to 70.5 years in 2021. Men were 68.3 years old in 2018, 68.6 years in 2020, and 68.3 years in 2021, and women were 72.4 years old in 2018, 72.9 years in 2020, and 72.5 years in 2021.

Life expectancy in 2021 was 84.6 years, showing a 14.1-year gap with healthy life expectancy. The gap between life expectancy and healthy life expectancy widened from 12.7 years in 2019 to 14.1 years in 2021.

Rep. Nam In-soon said, “In order to extend healthy lifespan and reduce the gap between life expectancy and life expectancy, we need to change the paradigm of our country’s healthcare policy from focusing on post-acute treatment to pre-disease prevention and health promotion, and detect health risk factors in advance to prevent disease and provide timely treatment. “It’s important to do it,” he emphasized.
