At the end of September, there were 604,921,653 leva banknotes in circulation in the country, according to the statistics of the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB), published on its website. Compared to the end of August, they decreased by 0.07 percent (605,354,831 units).

The most banknotes in circulation were again those with a denomination of BGN 50 – 251,089,244 pieces, followed by banknotes of BGN 100 – 142,123,500 pieces and those with a denomination of BGN 20 – 97,914,354 pieces. The value of banknotes in circulation in BGN was BGN 29,695,044,185 at the end of September. Compared to the end of August, the increase was 0.28 percent (BGN 29,611,675,705).

The data show that for the third quarter of the year, a total of 283 counterfeit banknotes circulating in our country were registered and seized. As in the second quarter, now most of them have a denomination of BGN 100 – 158 pieces. During this period, 62 fake banknotes with a denomination of BGN 50, 49 with a denomination of BGN 20, 13 with a denomination of BGN 10 and one banknote with a denomination of BGN 5 were also registered and seized.

At the end of 1999, there were 160,559,571 banknotes in circulation, BNB statistics show. At that time, the banknote with the largest denomination was the one of BGN 50, of which 20,074,488 were in circulation.

At the end of 1999, the banknotes with a denomination of 1 BGN were distributed the most – 37,223,418 pieces. Banknotes of 1 BGN have not been in circulation since January 1, 2016, but they continue to be exchanged at the cash desks of the BNB. The 100 BGN banknote has been in circulation since December 8, 2003.
