Journalist Claus Strunz, 58, will become editorial director and interim CEO of media company Euronews, a Brussels-based news channel. The role of CEO has a minimum duration of six months. Last week, the dismissal of previous CEO Guillaume Dubois was announced with immediate effect. As editorial director – comparable to the role of editor-in-chief – Strunz should lead Euronews’ editorial strategy, it said in a statement.

The journalist worked for many years at the Axel Springer publishing house in various roles. He was, among other things, deputy editor-in-chief of WELT, editor-in-chief of “Bild am Sonntag” and editor-in-chief of the “Hamburger Abendblatt”. In 2011 Strunz became managing director of television and video production at Axel Springer and subsequently head of the television production company Maz & More TV, which, among other things, produces breakfast television for the broadcaster Sat.1. He was recently a member of the editor-in-chief of “Bild” and was also responsible for moving images.

“Lead and inspire”

Euronews is a pan-European broadcaster founded in 1993 and broadcasts its programs in 12 languages, as well as five partner programs in other languages. The station is committed to broadcasting a variety of viewpoints and to being independent. Euronews claims to reach 400 million families in 160 countries. Last year, Euronews’ headquarters moved from Lyon to Brussels under former CEO Dubois, and around 200 jobs were cut in France.

“Europe faces great challenges,” said Claus Strunz about his new role: “In times like these, independent journalism is particularly important and promised a “critical view” and a “deep trust in European values ”.

97.6% of Euronews SA belongs to the investment company Alpac Capital. Its CEO is the Portuguese Pedro Vargas David. Two years ago Alpac Capital bought Euronews from Egyptian billionaire Naguib Sawiris. At that point Euronews would have suffered losses. The station has received funding from the European Union over the years. Now, said Alpac boss Vergas David, it is important to “guide and inspire Euronews in its development”.
