About 18% of Ecuadorian households reported having a vehicle in the country, according to data processed by PRIMICIAS from the latest National Employment, Unemployment and Underemployment Survey (ENEMDU) of the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INEC) from April 2024.
Of those households, 9% reported having more than one vehicle. That is, these households would benefit more from subsidies for low-octane gasoline (Extra and Ecopaís), which the Government has announced that it will eliminate in 2024.
In fact, the Minister of Economy, Juan Carlos Vega, maintains that 53% of the subsidy on Extra and Ecopaís gasoline benefits people who earn more than USD 1,809 per month. Considering that the State will allocate USD 631 million to subsidize both low-octane gasoline in 2024, this means that people who earn more than USD 1,809 per month receive a benefit of USD 334.43 million this year.
Of that almost 9% of households, 7.3% said they had two vehicles and 1.4% of households said they had more than three vehicles. Vehicle means cars and motorcycles. On the other hand, according to the same data processed by PRIMICIAS of Enemdu, 91% of families mentioned that they have a vehicle. In Ecuador, there are a total of 5.2 million households, according to data from the 2022 Census.
And the motorcycles?
Another data from the Enemdu survey of April 2024 reflects that 12.4% of Ecuadorian families have a motorcycle in their home. Meanwhile, 87.86% of families declared that they do not have motorcycles. Of the total number of families that have a motorcycle, more than 90% have one of these vehicles, however, only 7.25% of families have two or more motorcycles.
How much do you spend per month on fuel?
More than 90% of households reported having spent between USD 8 and USD 100 per month, according to data from (Enemdu). Between 3% and 5% of families said they spent more than USD 100, but less than USD 200. And less than 3% spent more than USD 200 per month.
Which provinces concentrate the most vehicles?
There is more data on vehicle ownership in INEC’s 2022 ESTRA Transport Statistics survey, the latest available. According to this source of information, the largest provinces, where there is a greater proportion of the population, concentrate the greatest number of vehicles. Thus, Guayas concentrates 22.8%. Followed by Pichincha, with 19.8%; and Manabí with 10.5%. On the other hand, Galapagos (0.1%), Napo (0.5%) and Pastaza (0.5%) are provinces with the smallest number of vehicles circulating in the country.
