A fire is burning in the mountain above Berkovitsa near Mount Kom, the Director of the Regional Directorate “Fire Safety and Protection of the Population” (RDPBZN) in Montana Commissioner Vencislav Raykov told BTA.
The fire broke out around 9:00 p.m. yesterday, October 18, in a hard-to-reach area near Mount Kom in Stara Planina. About 50 decares of dry grass and bushes have burned in it. The teams of RDPBZN managed to extinguish the fire around midnight, and this morning it broke out again near the already burned areas.
At the moment, the extinguishing continues, there are three teams of the fire department and employees from forestry in the area. In the hard-to-reach places, where the fire engines cannot get out, it is also extinguished by hand, Commissioner Raykov added.
During the fires in Montansko this summer, 2,488 decares of forests and 117,000 decares of dry grass and bushes burned. Since the beginning of this year, there have been 583 field fires in the region, up from 284 last year. Fires in forest territory are 24 compared to three in 2023. Accidents handled by fire departments in Montana are 1,300 compared to 1,200 last year.
