Grigor Dimitrov played one of his best matches of the year and cooled the Swiss talent’s hopes to continue at the tournament in Stockholm.
The best Bulgarian tennis player in history defeated Dominic Stricker 6:3, 6:2. The rotund left-hander was ranked No.88 in the world but fell out of the top 300 due to injuries.
From 3:3 in the first set, Dimitrov made a series of 7 games in a row and there was no way back in the match for his opponent. It was in the Swedish capital that Grigor won his first ATP tournament title in 2013. In addition, he has lost two more finals.
The opponent of the former world No. 3 will be Talon Grikspor, who won against the second-ranked Casper Ruud (Nor). Dimitrov easily defeated the Dutchman recently at the US Open.
Our tennis player already has 18 victories in Stockholm – the most of any player still playing. In the world ranking, Dimitrov climbed one place and is 9th. In the points standings this year alone, he is still in 10th place, but he has closed the gap on Andrey Rublev (Rus) and Alex de Minor (AVL), who dropped out in Stockholm and Antwerp respectively. This ranking will determine the participants (8) in the ATP Finals in Turin next month.
In the other semi-final in Sweden, the opponents are veteran Stan Wawrinka (Switzerland) and Tommy Paul (USA).
