Almost 31,000 new corona infections and 45 deaths since Monday

Opening steps or not – the new corona infections are still at a high level. From Monday to Tuesday, the Ministry of Health and the Interior reported 30,939 new infections. Of particular note are the 45 deaths reported within 24 hours. The numbers also increased significantly in the hospitals: 2,760 people suffering from Covid 19 in hospitals are 168 more than on Monday. Of these, 195 currently have to be treated in intensive care.

The number of intensive care patients has remained the same since Monday, but increased by four people within a week. 230 deaths have been registered in the past seven days. Overall, the Covid 19 pandemic has claimed 15,071 lives in Austria since it broke out. 168.7 people per 100,000 inhabitants have died from or with Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic.

The almost 31,000 new infections are slightly below the average of the past seven days with 31,475 new cases. However, the seven-day incidence increased from 2,397.6 to 2,466.5 cases per 100,000 population. As of Tuesday, there were more active cases in Austria again. 293,688 people are currently suffering from an infection, which is 4,261 more than the day before.

Vaccination progress continued to be sluggish. On Monday, only 3,677 vaccinations were carried out, 384 were first shots, fewer than since the start of the vaccination campaign in January 2021. 892 vaccinations were second shots and most – namely 2,401 – were so-called booster vaccinations. This means that 6,239,548 people or 69.9 percent of Austrians currently have valid vaccination protection. That’s even 1,568 fewer people than the day before. This means that these people have forgone the third stitch for immunization and have lost their valid vaccination certificate as a result. The expert commission set up by the government to evaluate compulsory vaccination is due to present its first report this Tuesday.

The protection rate (valid vaccination certificate) is highest in Burgenland at 76 percent. In Lower Austria 71.9 percent of the population have a valid vaccination protection, in Styria 70.7 percent. After Vienna (68.9), Tyrol (68), Carinthia (66.8), Salzburg (66) and Vorarlberg (65.9), Upper Austria continues to bring up the rear with 65.5 percent.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, there have been almost three million (exactly 2.9 million) confirmed corona cases in Austria. Around 2.6 million have recovered from an infection. On Tuesday there were most new infections in Lower Austria with 5,911 cases, followed by 5,840 cases in Vienna. Burgenland registered the smallest increase with 856 new infections. Broken down by incidence (cases within a week per 100,000 inhabitants), Vorarlberg is currently at the top with a value of 2,815.9, followed by Lower Austria with 2,689.5, Salzburg with 2,659.7 and Styria with 2,612.2. Tyrol has a seven-day incidence of 2,521.6, Upper Austria 2,505.7, Burgenland 2,292.5, Carinthia 2,204.1 and Vienna 2,097.8.

5.77 percent of the 535,784 PCR tests performed were positive. A total of 632,353 tests were carried out from Monday to Tuesday.
