Due to the combination of low birth rate and avoidance of essential departments, new specialists have not been recruited. In particular, the shortage of obstetricians and gynecologists was found to be more serious in rural areas.
According to data submitted by Park Seung-hee, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea to the National Assembly Health and Welfare Committee, from the Ministry of Health and Welfare on the 20th, as of August this year, there were 6,082 obstetricians and gynecologists nationwide, and the average age was 54.4 years old.
By age group, people in their 50s accounted for the most, accounting for 32.5% (1,979 people). Those in their 40s were 22.8% (1,386 people), those in their 60s were 22.2% (1,350 people), and those in their 70s or older were 10.8% (659 people), but those in their 30s or younger were only 11.6% (708 people).
The aging phenomenon of obstetricians and gynecologists was particularly serious in the region. Gyeongbuk had the highest average age of obstetricians and gynecologists at 60.8 years, while Jeonbuk (59.6 years) and Jeonnam (59.1 years) also exceeded the average age. There were only four metropolitan local governments that were lower than the national average: Daegu (54 years old), Gyeonggi (53 years old), Seoul (51.8 years old), and Sejong (51.5 years old).
The national average for the number of obstetricians and gynecologists per 1,000 women was 0.24, but in Gyeongbuk, it was only 0.16. Rep. Park said, “There are concerns about a gap in obstetrics and gynecology in the future because the number of specialists in rural areas is small and the average age is high, so it is urgent to come up with measures.”
