Sucre is one of the cantons that concentrates the most violent incidents in Manabí. Criminal gangs dispute the territory for drug trafficking.
Since the morning of this Thursday, June 20, 2024, the Sucre canton, located in the north center of Manabí, has been militarized. The Armed Forces deployed a contingent of 150 soldiers to carry out arms, ammunition and explosives control operations, called Camex.
Sucre is one of the cantons with the highest rates of violence in Manabí, a province affected by the presence of criminal gangs.
The Armed Forces indicated that with this deployment they seek to “reestablish and maintain the security of the population.” Sucre is a territory with access to the sea, so there is a struggle between the criminal organizations Los Lobos and Los Choneros, for drug trafficking.
Furthermore, this Manabi canton is the third priority district in Manabí by the National Police, due to the concentration of violence. For example, at the beginning of this week, in just 72 hours, five violent deaths were recorded in three different scenes.
Sucre joins other cantons that are intervened by the military in Manabí, such as Manta, Montecristi and Jaramijó.
