The versatile and diverse poetic creativity of Molla Juma – a precious decoration of the treasury of Azerbaijani ashug poetry, serves as a worthy example for the modern generation, which continues to develop and enrich the ever-living ashug art
Ashug Molla Juma – Suleiman Salah ogly from the Molla Oruj clan was born in 1850 in the small village of Layiski, Goynuk settlement, Sheki (Nukha) district of Azerbaijan, in the family of a hereditary plowman. From childhood, his father taught his only son to take agricultural work seriously. The diligent young man, over several years of study at a rural madrasah, perfectly mastered the Arabic and Persian languages, memorized the Koran, and had a great interest in oriental classical literature and folklore. For several years he took private lessons from the famous scientist of his time, Sheikh Ahmed Gureishi. The mentor had a beautiful only daughter, two years younger than Suleiman. Sheikh Ahmed often gave them joint lessons in Arabic, Persian and theology, taught poetry, oriental literature, astronomy, mathematics, natural history and other secular sciences. The young man and the girl fell deeply in love with each other.
Soon the people nicknamed young Suleiman “molla” due to his learning and erudition. His fame quickly spread throughout his native Sheki, from Derbent to Tabriz. But then disaster struck – his beloved suddenly passed away, struck down by an incurable disease. From that moment on, motifs of aching pain and sorrow occupied a large place in the ashug’s work. Throughout the rest of his life, Ashug tirelessly and inconsolably mourned his love, vividly describing tenderness, passion, and beauty through various heroes in poetry. Ashug was deeply convinced that the happiness of any person is his love, and it is in the search for this ennobling, high feeling that everyone can achieve perfection. At the same time, in his works he spoke out against the vices of society, social oppression, and was a defender of the ideas of the first democratic republic in the East – the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, for which he was killed by the Bolsheviks…
It should be noted that within the framework of the “Musiqi kimliyimiz” project, evenings dedicated to ashug art and epics with a long history are presented. <a href="https://time.news/the-our-musical-identification-undertaking-devoted-to-ashug-shamshir-was-accomplished-in-ganja-2024-05-26-073514/" title="The “Our Musical Identification” undertaking devoted to Ashug Shamshir was accomplished in Ganja
