Simon Fieschi, who worked as a webmaster at Charlie Hebdo, died on October 17, the prosecutor’s office in Paris announced. During the attack on the satirical newspaper on January 7, 2015, he was seriously injured by gunfire that killed 12 people.
An investigation was opened to understand the circumstances of his death. Initial autopsy results have not been able to determine the cause of death, and research continues. Mise Nathalie Senyk, Simon’s lawyer, clarified that no evidence shows voluntary activity and suggested caution until the investigation is completed.
The death of Simon Fieschi has inspired many tributes. Charlie Hebdo expressed its deep sorrow through its X account, praising a “funny and lively” friend and defender of freedom. Arthur Dénouveaux, head of the association of victims of the attack on November 13, 2015, also paid tribute to Simon, as did Juliette Méadel, former Secretary of State in charge of victim assistance.
The spokesperson for the National Police shared their thoughts with Simon and all victims of terrorism. François Hollande, president at the time of the Charlie Hebdo attack, emphasized Simon’s efforts to overcome the horror he suffered.
Arthur Dénouveaux mentioned another recent suicide among the victims of the 2015 attacks, highlighting the ongoing consequences of these tragedies. Simon Fieschi, the first victim of the 2015 attack, recently testified at the trial of Peter Cherif, a jihadist involved in the attack, describing the physical and psychological after-effects he suffered.
