An international team of astronomers has determined the exact positions of more than 1 million galaxies in the known Universe. As Day.Az reports, the study was published in the scientific journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society (MNRAS).

The project, called “Physics of the Accelerating Universe,” involved 14 scientific institutes. Specialists used the PAUCam camera on the 4.2-meter William Herschel Telescope on the Spanish island of La Palma for observations.

The use of new technology allowed the team to detect and locate galaxies located more than 10 billion light years from Earth.

“The survey will allow us to study how galaxies are related to their environment, which is mainly composed of dark matter, and understand how far away galaxies of a certain type and brightness are, which will help us conduct more precise scientific research,” explained research team member Professor Benjamin Joachimi from University College London.

The new catalog will allow astronomers to create more accurate maps to understand how structure forms in the Universe and study the expansion of the Universe under the influence of dark matter and dark energy.
