Uppsala University Hospital said the misdiagnoses, in women aged between 38 and 85, were discovered in a review after the hospital noticed an “unexplained” increase in cases.
“After testing the women were told they had precancerous cells that are a precursor to uterine cancer, and were therefore advised surgery,” the hospital said in a statement.
It was later discovered that those diagnoses “were incorrect. No surgery would have been necessary,” he added.
“We are deeply sorry for what happened. The removal of the uterus is a major operation, with major and irreversible consequences. It should not happen, yet it happened,” said Johan Lugnegard, head of the hospital.
Lugnegard said at a news conference that most of the women were in their 50s and 60s, local media reported.

The hospital said affected women will be given the opportunity to claim compensation.
The hospital said the women had been diagnosed with endometrial intraepithelial neoplasia (EIN), a precursor to uterine cancer. A review found there had been “systematic overdiagnosis“.
