With the start of the <a href="https://time.news/police-director-visits-cali-to-work-on-cop16-security/" title="Police Director visits Cali to work on COP16 security”>COP16 World Biodiversity Summit, the National Government has issued a statement of tranquility ensuring that the success of the event is guaranteed. The Minister of Defense, Iván Velásquez, highlighted the rigorous security preparations implemented in the city of Cali, headquarters of the summitwhich will bring together more than 15,000 attendees from 196 countries.
“Everything has been defined in great detail and we hope that in November we can report absolute success at COP16,” said Velásquez, stressing that all necessary measures have been taken to ensure the event.
As part of the security strategy, more than 11,000 members of the Police and the National Army have been deployed in Cali and its surroundings.including the municipality of Yumbo. This security device has been personally supervised by President Gustavo Petro, who has given priority to the protection of the participants and the integrity of the international meeting.
Among the key points of the city that will have greater surveillance include Bulevar del Río, the Marco Fidel Suárez Military Aviation School, and the hotel areas that will house the international delegates. In addition, the Urban Operations Support Command of the National Army will be present to guarantee security throughout the duration of the event.
Minister Velásquez also reported that an Intelligence Fusion Center has been installed in Cali, where security forces will work together to identify and respond to possible threats. This center will analyze information from intelligence operations, allowing rapid action against risks such as terrorism, mobilizations and road blockades.

One of the biggest security challenges will be airspace control, especially in the face of the possible threat from unauthorized drones. To mitigate this risk, the government has acquired anti-drone systems that will be operated by the Colombian Air Force. “Special measures have been taken to prevent the use of drones that could affect the summit,” the minister added.
Furthermore, during the days of COP16, only drones that have been previously registered with the authorities will be allowed to fly, according to the strategy agreed between the National Government and the United Nations. Velásquez highlighted that there will also be several Unified Command Posts (PMU), both in Cali and Bogotá, to monitor and coordinate security activities on a continuous basis.
“We have considered all possibilities, from possible attacks by illegal organizations to health emergencies and fires, and we are prepared to respond to any unforeseen event,” concluded Velásquez.
