The interim government has decided to limit the arrival of tourists to St. Martin’s Island in Cox’s Bazar. As part of this, several decisions have been taken, including a ban on overnight stays on the island in November and a ban on visiting it in February.

Chief Adviser’s Deputy Press Secretary Apoorba Jahangir gave this information in a press briefing at Foreign Service Academy Auditorium in the capital on Tuesday (October 22) evening.

Apoorba Jahangir said, it has been decided to limit the movement of tourists to St. Martin. Tourists can visit there in November, but cannot stay overnight. In December and January, not more than 2,000 tourists can go in a day. Tourists will be completely stopped in February. Then there will be cleaning work.

He said, these steps have been taken from the idea of making Saint Martin environmentally friendly. Carrying single plastics (single use) into St. Martin will be permanently banned.

In response to the question of how to determine the number of 2,000 tourists per day, he said that the numbering will be done when the tourists go.

In the briefing, the deputy press secretary of the chief adviser. Abul Kalam Azad Majumder, Assistant Press Secretary Naeem Ali and Suchismita Tithi were present.

Earlier on October 7, the advisor of the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, Syeda Rizwana Hasan said, “Various restrictions related to travel to St. Martin Island will be implemented before the start of the next tourism season, i.e. before November.” I will start work to make St. Martin, Cox’s Bazar and Kuakata free of single use plastic. It will not happen in a day, but the work will be started.’
