Vice Presidency of the National Assembly: Elections are expected to take place this afternoon
Following the appointment of Annie Genevard (LR) to the government, the post of vice-president of the National Assembly is vacant. The “VPs” preside over the public sessions in the same capacity as the President of the Assembly, Yaël Braun-Pivet. They sit in the headquarters of the institution and are also delegated part of the management of the Palazzo Borbone.
The election should take place on Tuesday afternoon, after questions to the government, around 4.30pm. This is a paper vote by secret ballot by the 577 deputies. Unlike the election of the President of the Assembly, which is very ceremonial, where deputies are called in alphabetical order to place their ballot paper in a ballot box in the gallery, this election takes place in several polling stations adjacent to the chamber. This might make the process a little faster… but it will still take a long time. Because in the first two rounds an absolute majority of voters is required to be elected, which, in the configuration of the Assembly, seems unlikely. In the third round only a relative majority is sufficient. Finally, at each round new candidates can present themselves or withdraw.
Who is the favorite? Let’s be honest: it’s impossible to predict. On paper, if the July agreement on positions between the central bloc and LR is respected, it will be up to Virginie Duby-Muller (Savoy), the LR candidate, to get the seat. Except that since the election of the “rebel” Aurélie Trouvé (Seine-Saint-Denis) as president of the economic affairs commission against a deputy from the Ensemble pour la République (EPR) with the help of LR, nothing is going right anymore.
Furthermore, the MoDem, excluded from the incredible July elections, will present a candidate: Christophe Blanchet (Calvados). The National Rally presents Yoan Gillet (Gard). Some want to take advantage of the elections to reinstate the RN to the office, where it has no incumbent president, but it is doubtful that there will be enough of them for this to work. Olivier Serva (Liberty, Independents, Overseas and Territories, Guadeloupe), aims to become the first overseas vice-president. He turned to the left, but the New Popular Front will eventually present its own common candidate. We don’t know his identity yet, but Jérémie Iordanoff (Isère) is an ecologist candidate. His moderate profile may appeal to members of the central bloc who do not want to vote LR. Let us remember, however, that the balance is very tight. The left currently has 192 votes; the government “common base” without the MoDem, 175. In short, the result is unpredictable.
