What is a ‘Martian base’ doing in the Da Vinci museum in Milan

Time.news – La conquest of Mars for now it remains a dream, but the National Science and Technology Museum in Milan has tried to move forward. From Saturday 12 March, in fact, at the Da Vinci opens to the public ‘Stem Lab Base Marte’, the new educational space that recreates a Martian base. Designed especially for children aged 10 to 14, the laboratory is an immersive research environment in which to put yourself in the shoes of the crew of astronauts on a mission to the Red Planet to ensure the survival of the Base.

The initiative involves schools, third sector subjects, local administrations and foundations, with the aim of creating a context that uses innovative methodologies for STEM (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics) education.

“Stem Lab Base Marte is a permanent resource in the educational offer of the Museum which for the next few years will be open to all our public, with the particular aim of supporting and supporting the development of skills and talents in the Stem field for girls. and young people as an instrument of active citizenship and a lever for social development ”, underlines Fiorenzo Galli, general director of the Museum.

A laboratory room

Boys will be invited to participate in a mission to the Red Planet: divided into 5 groups, like real research teams, they will have to carry out experimental activities to concretely manage situations and events that follow one another on the Martian base, dedicated to Giovanni Schiaparelli, bringing the crew to safety.

A narrative plot supports and motivates the explorations of scientific-technological elements, such as cultivating vegetables to ensure the supply of food, providing maintenance and energy production, keeping one’s companions in good physical and mental health, managing supports vital parts of the structure, explore the outer surface of the planet with rovers.

An environment of the “Martian base”

Base Marte is one of the 14 educational spaces inside the Museum – a unique institution of its kind for the nature and consistency of its historical heritage and for the leading role in Italy and of excellence in Europe in STEM education – and will represent an important resource aimed at training and involving thousands of students, teachers, families and visitors under the guidance of scientific animators, with the aim of creating a positive relationship with STEM subjects.
