The first and most important aspect of sustainable railway development is emissions reduction and energy efficiency. Rail transport accounts for only 1% of global carbon dioxide emissions, making it more efficient than other modes of transport.
This was stated by the Chairman of Azerbaijan Railways CJSC (AZD) Rovshan Rustamov at an event on the topic “Sustainable transport for the future,” Day.Az reports with reference to Trend.
He noted that railway transport accounts for 1.12% of total energy consumption in Azerbaijan, and greenhouse gas emissions account for less than 0.5%.
“Our goal is to create a completely carbon-free, that is, carbon-neutral railway transport system. In 2023, 100 percent of passenger transportation and 80 percent of freight transportation were carried out using electricity,” said the chairman of AZD.
Recently it became known which part of the Azerbaijani railway will be electrified.
