Online ordering is one of the options for fraud by cybercriminals. It all starts with a received message that finally your parcel, from countries outside the European Union, is already in Bulgaria. The following are a series of steps you must take to pay and “release” your shipment. And there comes the deception.
“Since the beginning of the year, we have registered over 1,000-1,200 reports of various types of cybercrime. Every following year, the signals increase many times over, as the Bulgarian consumer is already quite digitized, likes to shop online, uses various online services,” Commissioner Svetlin Lazarov from the Cybercrime Department of the State Security Service told bTV.
A large proportion of the reports lead to reaching persons engaged in such criminal activity. Unfortunately, some of them are outside the territory of Bulgaria. If possible, international partners are notified in order to take measures in the relevant territory. In Bulgaria, it was reached to people who tried to make a similar type of fraud.
“The profit from cybercrime is huge. Losses for consumers and companies reach millions of BGN,” said Lazarov.
He urged people to carefully consider what links they follow and what sites they open, incl. why they are asked for money so that they do not become victims of fraud.
