A battle of words on the sidelines in FC Bayern‘s game against Barcelona. The sports channel DAZN reports on this. Sven Ulreich is said to have been involved.
According to sports reporter Laura Wontorra, Sven Ulreich is said to have once again attracted attention through a heated verbal duel with an opposing official. As broadcaster DAZN reported, FC Bayern Munich’s substitute goalkeeper is said to have clashed with his German assistant coach Marcus Sorg on the sidelines of the German record champions’ game against FC Barcelona. This is reported by the media, citing DAZN reporter Laura Wontorra.
Wontorra reported on Wednesday evening from the Champions League game from the Camp Nou stadium in Barcelona. As a field reporter, she gave her observations from the game at the beginning of the second half, including an incident that is said to have occurred while walking into the locker room. Accordingly, there was a war of words between Ulreich and Sorg.
“And when we went into the dressing room there was a loud argument between Sven Ulreich and Marcus Sorg. Let’s clarify afterwards what they had to discuss,” said the 35-year-old journalist. Wontorra couldn’t say what exactly the conversation was about.
When asked about the scene after the first half, Bayern coach Vincent Kompany said on DAZN: “I didn’t see that, I didn’t notice anything about it.” Kompany was already frustrated after the game that his team had suffered a defeat at the Spanish league leaders. The Munich team lost 5-1 in Catalonia (read the match report from our sports colleague here).
Sorg has been training the traditional Spanish club FC Barcelona since this season alongside former national coach and Bayern coach Hansi Flick. From 2016 to 2023, the Ulm native was assistant coach of the German national team, initially under Joachim Löw and later under Flick.
If the incident is confirmed, it would be the second time in a short space of time that Ulreich has taken on an opposing supervisor. Just a month ago, the keeper caused a stir in the Bundesliga top game against Bayer Leverkusen. At that time he had a verbal argument with Leverkusen’s sports director Simon Rolfes and called him a “wanker”.
The keeper’s freakout was captured on a short video clip. In the photo you can see the angry Bayern goalkeeper on the bench. First you hear the loud complaint “Time game”, then the request: “Stop it over there, you bum.” Ulreich can then be heard saying “Hey, hey, sit down Rolfes, you wanker”.
For this, Ulreich was suspended for one game by the control committee of the German Football Association. The keeper also has to pay a fine of 20,000 euros. Ulreich and FC Bayern have already agreed to the verdict, but Bayern’s sports director Max Eberl considers the sentence to be “excessive”. As a club, Ulreich “will not be left alone, we will get through this together.”
Bayern coach Vincent Kompany thinks this attitude is right at the club. “Ulle’s interaction with his teammates in the squad is so important, he actually does it almost 100 percent right every day. If someone like that makes a mistake, then Max and the club have made the right decision that we support him,” said the Belgian, who will have to do without his substitute keeper in the top game on Sunday against pursuers Eintracht Frankfurt.
