The jallikattu competition started at 8 am yesterday in connection with the festival at Chinnammanko in Chattravellalapatti near Palamedu in Madurai district. Madurai Revenue Commissioner Sukipremala presided over the function and started the Jallikkattu competition by hoisting the flag.

Cholavanthan legislator Venkatesan and panchayat leader Selvarani Chidambaram were in the forefront. First the temple cows were unloaded.

BJP state president Annamalai was present as an observer at the Jallikkat. He looked at the cowboys and shook hands and cheered. BJP Suburban District Chairman Suchindran and executives were present.

702 bulls from various districts including Madurai, Dindigul, Theni, Ramanathapuram, Sivagangai, Pudukottai and Trichy participated. The tournament, which was held in 6 rounds, was attended by 300 players in uniform at a rate of 50 each. The owner of the best non-catching cow and the best cowboy were rewarded with a separate two-wheeler.

23 people were injured

23 people including spectators were injured in the incident. The Palamedu Government Hospital team treated the injured.

About 400 policemen, including Additional Superintendent Mani, Deputy Superintendent Balasundaram and Inspector Shankar Kannan, were deployed on security duty. The Jallikkattu match ended at 4 pm. Jallikattu arrangements were made by the villagers of Chattravellalapatti and the festival committee.
