The first meeting with Diana‘s eyes: an excerpt from the volume which will be released on Tuesday 22 October by Solferino
The first dog I met in my life was a Breton because unfortunately my mother was a hunter. On Sunday, after the hunting trip, he met with the others for refreshments outdoors and of course there were also dogs. I was two years old and, naturally, I was still unsure of my legs: I remember running towards a white and brown dog, putting my nose in its fur, then I looked at her and she looked back at me with her round and very sweet eyes. . I still didn’t have clear ideas about animals and I remember the clumsy attempts to climb onto her back, with her dodging away trying to tell me that it wasn’t a horse. However clumsy it was, it was love at first sight.
I was eighteen when I got my first dog from the shelter. Her name was Bella because I had just read The History of Morante and only now, looking at the photos, I realized that it was a half Breton.
The Breton Spaniel is one of the oldest breeds of hunting dogs, having spread throughout Europe for centuries. It is a dog that flushes out and raises game, used to working in a team with others. In terms of character, the Bretons match me a lot. They are cheerful, always happy, very affectionate, they have no neuroses, but if you annoy them they growl and don’t let anyone push their way.
