Matteo Berrettini beat Frances Tiafoe in straight sets

Things are still going according to plan for Matteo Berrettini on Austrian soil in 2024. The reigning winner of the Generali Open in Kitzbühel reached the quarter-finals of the Erste Bank Open in Vienna on Wednesday evening – and eliminated one of the favorites with the title on the way there.

It was Frances Tiafoe who lost to Berrettini 3:6, 7:6 (6) and 3:6 in a very entertaining match. The American stayed within three match points of the Italian in the second set, but then lost the lead in the third round. After more than three hours of play, Berrettini was able to celebrate the highly competitive three-set victory.

After defeating Tiafoe, Berrettini will face either Brandon Nakashima or Karen Khachanov in the quarterfinals. Although the American’s victory over Tommy Paul in the first round was a surprise, the Russian is full of confidence after his victory in the tournament in Almaty.

Tiafoe must finally write off the ATP Finals in Turin. Even with victory in the competition in Paris-Bercy, the 26-year-old man has no chance of being one of the eight best players of the year. It was only possible to start in the Italian city if there was at least one cancellation.

This is the single tableau in Vienna
