Torrential rain is expected to resume or continue on Saturday in southeastern France, where five departments are now on orange alert. In addition to the Gard, the Var and the Alpes-Maritimes, already under rain warning since Friday, Météo-France added the Hérault to the list on Saturday 26 October. The Alpes-de-Haute-Provence are, for their part, on orange alert for floods.

The meteorological institute also extended the alert on Saturday until 6am on Sunday for the Var and the Maritime Alps. However, the firefighters did not report any significant interventions during the night between Friday and Saturday in the two departments.

For Hérault, “Cumulus clouds between 30 and 50 millimeters are expected in a very widespread manner, and locally between 70 and 100 millimeters in the plains, with locally high intensities and temporarily stationary rainfall as in the previous night. Inland, particularly on the Espinouse side, accumulations could reach 120-150 millimetres”Météo-France specified in his 6 o’clock bulletin.

At a local level, more than heavy rainfall is expected at times, “It is above all the duration of this episode that requires particular monitoring”warns the meteorological institute.

Vidauban may experience further heavy rain

The Var has so far been the most affected department, particularly in the Vidauban sector, forcing the authorities to take refuge on Friday “almost 1,900 people” as a precaution, the prefecture said.

“The night was very quiet, we didn’t carry out any interventions”the Var firefighters explained to Agence France-Presse on Saturday morning, specifying that they had implemented it “a forecasting system, more” of those “already planned for the current activity”. “The Vidauban region, heavily hit on Friday by torrential and stationary rains, could be hit again by these new heavy rains”however, Météo-France warned.

The Alpi Marittime firefighters also announced that they had not carried out the intervention “no interventions related to last night’s bad weather”.

Last week, Gard and Var had already been hit by heavy rains. The episode, which affected much of the central-east of the country, caused exceptional flooding in the Ardèche and the Rhône.

Prime Minister Michel Barnier visited the latter department on Friday, announcing the launch of a public consultation on the country’s third adaptation plan to climate change, which will make these weather events more frequent and more intense.
