‘Baseball genius’ Shohei Ohtani (LA Dodgers), who became the first player in American professional baseball’s Major League (MLB) history to reach 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases, was selected as Sporting News’ Player of the Year.
Sporting News, an American sports media outlet, announced on the 25th (Korean time) that Ohtani was selected as MLB’s ‘Player of the Year’ as selected by the media through voting by active players, coaches, and officials from 30 teams.
Ohtani, who received this award in 2021, was named ‘Player of the Year’ again this year, becoming the 11th multiple-time winner in history.
In 2021, he appeared in 23 games as a starting pitcher, recording 9 wins, 2 losses, and an average ERA of 3.18, and also appeared in 155 games as a batter, hitting 0.257 (138 hits in 537 at-bats), 46 home runs, 100 RBIs, 26 steals, and 103 runs. Selected as a player.
At the time, Ohtani was the first player in MLB history to achieve 100 innings, 100 strikeouts, 100 hits, 100 RBIs, and 100 runs in one season.
Ohtani, who transferred to the Dodgers ahead of this season, engraved his name in MLB history again this year.
Ohtani added 3 home runs and 2 stolen bases in the 2024 MLB game against the Miami Marlins on the 20th of last month, achieving 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases for the first time in MLB history.
Sporting News reported, “Since 1876, when the MLB National League (NL) was introduced, five players have joined the 40-40 club, but no one has come close to Ohtani’s record.”
Ohtani continued to add home runs and stolen bases, finishing the season with 54 home runs and 59 stolen bases.
Sporting News said, “Ohtani, who pitched better than most pitchers and hit better than most batters, was forced to focus only on hitting due to an elbow injury, and this year he performed the best in baseball history.”
He also succeeded in advancing to the World Series (WS) in his first MLB fall baseball game, and is scheduled to play the first game against the New York Yankees on the 26th.
Mason Miller (Oakland) was selected as ‘Rookie of the Year’ in the American League (AL), and Jackson Merrill (San Diego) was selected in the National League (NL).
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (Toronto) and Chris Sale (Atlanta) were selected as ‘Return of the Year’ from AL and NL, respectively.
Lastly, Stephen Bott (AL, Cleveland) and Pat Murphy (NL, Milwaukee) were named ‘Coach of the Year’.
