Ethiopian Yomif Kejelcha broke the half marathon world record by one second on Sunday in Valencia, Spain, World Athletics announced.

The 27-year-old runner clocked a time of 57 minutes and 30 seconds in the rain, beating the previous record of 57:31 set by Ugandan Jacob Kiplimo, dated November 21, 2021 in Lisbon.

Kejelcha passed the 10km in 27:12 with Kenyans Daniel Mateiko and Isaia Kipkoech Lasoi, then in 40:56 for the 15km, before widening the gap on his pursuers and heading to victory.

He adds a new line to his palmares after being world indoor champion in the 3000 meters (2016) and beating the world indoor record in the mile held by the Moroccan Hicham El Guerrouj.
