Bayer Leverkusen missed its fifth win of this Bundesliga season. The German champions had some problems in Bremen – and were caught out late.
German champions Bayer Leverkusen failed to reach the top of the Bundesliga table. At SV Werder Bremen, the Rhinelanders only managed a 2:2 (1:0). Bremen’s Romano Schmid equalized in the 90th minute.
Leverkusen’s top scorer Victor Boniface (30th), Bremen’s Marvin Ducksch (74th) and Felix Agu (77th) had previously scored with an own goal. The point moves Leverkusen to third place in the table, but the gap to leaders RB Leipzig is already five points.
Boniface had the chance to take Leverkusen’s early lead in the third minute, but didn’t hit the ball properly in a promising position. Otherwise, the master was initially busy with defensive tasks. Because unlike a few weeks ago in the 5-0 defeat against Bayern Munich, Werder acted much more courageously and had some good chances.
Marvin Ducksch in particular seemed to have a lot planned. The attacker recently made it clear in “Kicker” that he has not yet given up his dream of being called up for the national team again. The Werder striker was in top form most recently in the 4-2 win in Wolfsburg – and Ducksch was also the focus of attention a few times against Leverkusen.
In the 14th minute, Ducksch ran towards the Leverkusen goal alone after a dream pass from Mitchell Weiser, but was unable to overcome Bayer goalkeeper Lukáš Hrádecký with a slightly too careless lob. A short time later, Ducksch failed with a beautiful shot past the Leverkusen goalkeeper.
Boniface, on the other hand, was more effective. After a nice combination via Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong, the Bayern striker was there in the middle and gave the visitors the lead.
With the lead behind them, the Leverkusen team got the game under control in the Weserstadion, which was sold out with 42,100 spectators. Especially after the break, the defending champions controlled the action for a long time in the style of a top team.
But then Ducksch broke the Bremen home curse. After coach Ole Werner’s team failed to score in the first three games in front of their own crowd, Ducksch headed the equalizer a good quarter of an hour before the end. Finally, the famous foghorn sounded again on the Weser to celebrate the Green-Whites’ goals.
But the joy didn’t last long. Shortly after the celebrated equalizer, Agu shot the ball into his own goal under pressure from Frimpong. But Werder didn’t give up and equalized with a powerful shot from Schmid. A respectable success for Bremen, even if Werder couldn’t win any of the last nine Bundesliga games against Bayer.
