In the end it was too good for St. Gallen: Robin Gosens scored in long added time to make the final score 4-2 to Fiorentina. The home team once again experienced that mistakes are immediately punished at international level. However: The result was too high, even if Saint Gallen came under heavy pressure in the second half.
Görtler’s 2:2 does not go unanswered
Lukas Görtler made it 2-2 with a precise header from long range in the 62nd minute, bringing back hope of something significant. But Jonathan Ikoné made this disappear again just 7 minutes later. The French counter-attacked “Viola” to make it 3-2.
It was Ikoné’s second goal of the evening. After the break they were 5th in the table. Serie A came out of the locker room determined and within 4 minutes their 1-0 lead became 2-1 for St. Gallen:
- 50. Moment: Lucas Martinez is left criminally alone during a corner kick. He scored with a header to make it 1-1.
- 54. Moment: A simple deep pass can waste the Saint Gallen team. Ikoné Lawrence attacks Ati Zigi alone and makes it 2-1.
The Conference Series finals in the last two years have forgotten the first half very little. St. Gallen had taken the scepter from the start, and the “lilies” remained shockingly pale. However, coach Raffaele Palladino also rotated in 9 positions compared to the 6-0 win against Lecce at the weekend.
Mambimbi opens the score
Felix Mambimbi gave the teams a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute. Jordi Quintilla intercepted a pass from Fiorentina central defender Martinez and passed it to Mambimbi, who hit the bottom left corner between Martinez’s legs.
The scene followed almost seamlessly from an almost identical scene at the other end: Noah Yannick’s negligence went unpunished as Christian Kouamé was offside when the visitors were apparently 1-0 up.
Fiorentina fans as bad guests
In contrast to their team, the fans in the away block made mainly negative comments about themselves. They set off pyrotechnics several times and the game had to be interrupted several times.
Even after the second game in the Conference League, St. Gallen is still without any points. At the start, the away game against Cercle Bruges went very wrong (2:6).
This is how it goes
An away game between St. Gallen and Sion is scheduled for Sunday. Gaeil an Tuaiskirt from Lorne are the next opponents in the Conference Series on November 7th.
