Goheung-gun won the grand prize at the ‘40th Jeollanam-do Best Korean Beef Contest’. Goheung-gun (Governor Gong Young-min) announced that at the 40th Jeollanam-do Best Korean Beef Contest, it won the grand prize in the heifer category and the excellence award in the breeding division 3, as well as excellence awards in the city-county and livestock cooperative categories.

In this Korean beef contest, Korean cattle representing 22 cities and counties in Jeollanam-do competed in 6 categories (high-quality meat competition, heifers, heifers, and breeding sections 1, 2, and 3) after independent screening, and a total of 154 head of cattle were entered. It was conducted as a non-face-to-face screening.

In the quality Korean beef field, Goheung-gun once again proved the excellence of Yujagol Goheung Korean beef by winning the Best Heifer Award (Park Ji-yo, Donggang-myeon), the 3rd Breeding Division Excellence Award (Sin Sam-sik, Jeomam-myeon), the Excellent Livestock Cooperative Excellence Award, and the Excellent City-County Excellence Award.

According to the 2024 statistics of the Korean Livestock Improvement Association, Yujagol Goheung Hanwoo ranks second in the country in terms of ownership of ultra-high quality Korean cattle (53 heads) and fifth place in the country in terms of ownership of quality heifers (617 heads). In addition, according to the 2023 Livestock Product Quality Assessment Service, it ranked second in the country with a carcass grade (1++ or higher) appearance rate of 34.7%, producing the highest quality Korean beef.

A military official said, “As part of the Yujagol Goheung Korean beef brand development project promoted as a key policy of the 8th popular election, we plan to transform Goheung Korean beef into a high value-added industry by strengthening the competitiveness of fattening cattle and increasing the competitiveness of breeding cattle by supporting the development of high-quality heifers.” He said.

Meanwhile, Goheung-gun announced that as the risk of forest fires has increased due to recent strong winds and dry climate, the ‘2024 Disaster Response Safe Nation Training-linked Integrated Forest Fire Extinguishing Training’ was conducted in the Goheung Palyeong Gymnasium (near Unam Mountain) on the 24th.

This training assumes a complex disaster situation in which a large-scale forest fire caused by the incineration of agricultural by-products near Mt. Unam spreads to nearby multi-use facilities and electric vehicle fires, and is conducted by Goheung-gun, the Korea Forest Service (Yeongam Forest and Aviation Management Office), Suncheon National Forest Management Office, Jeollanam-do, and Goheung. It was a large-scale event with over 200 people from 14 related organizations and organizations, including the fire department, Goheung Police Station, and Army Unit 7391, participating.

The training was divided into discussion training and field training, and was linked in real time through the disaster safety communication network (PS-LTE). The training course involves all procedures from the occurrence of a forest fire to its end, including initial detection using forest fire information and communication technology (ICT) cameras, reporting by local residents, evacuation of hikers, rescue of the injured, extinguishing the main fire, and clearing up the remaining fire, according to the order of occurrence of the disaster situation. It was carried out through systematic inspection in cooperation with institutions.

In particular, in this training, various disaster response equipment was mobilized, including 5 forest fire helicopters, 10 forest fire extinguishing vehicles, 1 special fire extinguishing vehicle (Unimog), 1 thermal imaging drone, and 5 fire trucks, making it reminiscent of an actual disaster situation.

County Governor Gong Young-min said, “We will do our best to protect the lives and safety of residents even in unexpected disasters through training similar to actual situations.” He added, “In particular, as the number of forest fire disasters is increasing and they are becoming larger, a government-wide effort is needed.” This is an important issue that requires a response. “This training was a good opportunity to inspect the forest fire disaster response system,” he emphasized.

Goheung-gun plans to establish a forest fire prevention countermeasures headquarters at the Environment and Forestry Department and towns and villages from November 1 to December 15, the fall forest fire precaution period, and operate an emergency work system.
