Due to its economic, social and cultural value, the future of global trade and development of the world’s economies lies in Sonora and Arizona, communities united by a megaregion that was strengthened with the relaunch of the Sonora-United States Commission and the Arizona Commission. Mexico, enhanced by the Sonora Sustainable Energy Plan, agreed Governor Alfonso Durazo Montaño, and his Arizona counterpart, Katie Hobbs.
During the Plenary Meeting of the Sonora-United States Commission, two memorandums of understanding were signed by the binational working groups on education issues for the internationalization and integration of educational systems, water quality and the environment for cooperation and prosperity of both countries.
Before high-level business leaders and members of the public sector of Arizona and Mexico, the head of the state Executive emphasized that this annual binational meeting has been a space of convergence for progress and collaboration between two states, two cultures and the same objective: Build a future of shared prosperity.
“Sonora and Arizona are charting a joint strategic route, that is what this meeting is about. As a whole, our regions have exceptional comparative advantages within the North American bloc, which is why our efforts are focused on emerging technologies with great geopolitical relevance, such as clean energy, the semiconductor industry and electromobility,” he stated.
For her part, the governor of Arizona, Katie Hobbs, agreed on the importance of strengthening ties and stressed the relevance of this binational meeting for the present and future of both regions.
“When I realized the opportunity we had, I contacted Governor Alfonso Durazo and realized that we had a joint vision for the future of the commission in which we were ready to work, we talked about values and opportunities and decided to work together on this plenary session,” he assured.
Ken Salazar, United States ambassador to Mexico, asserted that the United States’ commitment is in Sonora and Arizona and celebrated the Plenary Meeting, as well as the agreements that are being built between both border states, thanks to their leaders.
“We want the United States and Mexico to go together, we want to ensure that there is prosperity for the people of Arizona, for the people of Sonora,” he commented.
Meanwhile, the president of the Business Coordinating Council, Francisco Cervantes, recognized the work of Governor Alfonso Durazo, leading the state in favor of private initiative and the transformation of the Plenary Commission.
“Thank you for being close to the business sector, to the Mexican and American private initiatives. I hope there are more governors like Alfonso Durazo. It is a source of great satisfaction that this meeting of so much economic, social and cultural value for Sonora and for Arizona and for our nations is held,” he highlighted.
